As close as I get to religion is when I'm in Yosemite Valley or hiking in the Sierras. I also like to hike around the Bay Area. For proximity I often walk in the Don Edwards Bird Preserve or at Coyote Park. A I mainly left this page here hoping that someone would be browsing around and would send me killer suggestions of 2-3 day hiking trips within 2 hours of the East Bay. If you know of such a trail, click here...
I spent 8 days in 1999 taking a Korean boy to Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Zion. We also went to Las Vegas, but that part was horrible!! If you can ever get away to these places during the off season and it is not snowing, you'll have the finest trip you can imagine. We waltzed into Zion on a Friday night and were able to get $49 rooms (with decks) right in the middle of the canyon. It might have been different if there had been snow, but there wasn't! ;-)
But I spent the majority of my summer exploring the California Coast and can heartily recommend the Julia Pfeiffer State Park as one of the finest on the coast. This Park (right by Big Sur) is within 10 miles of three galleries, the Nepenthe Restaurant, many funky shops, several awesome beaches and Julia Pfeiffer Bond State Park. Which is only important because it has a view of one of the finest spectacles on the coast, a redwood covered bluff with a waterfall that jets out and into the sea. All surrounded by a semicircle of rock with a sea-tunnel through it. It's a must-see if you ever hit the California coast.
